Back to Base
Disengagement • Proximity • Confidence • Regulation • Focus

Description
A trust-building game that teaches your dog to move away from a distraction and then return to you by choice. It helps them learn that reconnecting with you is always rewarding, no matter what’s happening around them. Over time, this builds emotional safety, confidence, and calm responsiveness.
How to Play
Start by tossing a single piece of food away from you.
As your dog runs to eat it, calmly turn your body in a new direction.
The moment your dog orients back towards you, mark and reward generously — FEED, FEED, FEED.
Vary your movement — sometimes stay still, sometimes take a few steps away. Keep the rhythm predictable and positive.
Practise regularly until your dog instinctively chooses to return to you after exploring, even when excited or distracted.
Why it Matters
Back to Base teaches your dog that moving away (disengaging) and coming back is safe and rewarding. This natural rhythm builds trust and emotional regulation — especially for dogs who struggle with reactivity, excitement, or environmental sensitivity. They learn that you are their secure base, the place where good things happen and calm is restored.
Tips for Success
Keep your movements smooth and your energy calm.
Reward the decision to turn back, not just arriving.
Practise in easy environments first before adding mild distractions.
Avoid calling your dog — let them choose to reorient naturally.
Combine with This Way or Trust Loop to strengthen movement-based safety patterns.
