Chin Rest

Confidence • Calmness • Connection • Focus • Body Awareness

Description

A cooperative-care game that encourages your dog to rest their chin in your hand or on a soft surface. It helps them gain confidence with touch and builds trust, calmness, and communication between you.

How to Play
  1. Sit comfortably and offer a flat palm or soft rolled-up towel as a target. If your dog naturally lowers their chin, mark and reward. Don’t lure — simply capture the behaviour.

  2. Present your hand just below their chin. When they lower their head, even slightly, mark and reward. Pause before removing your hand to keep everything calm and predictable.

  3. Gradually increase the time they rest their chin. Start with one or two seconds, then slowly build to longer durations. Add gentle touches only once your dog feels fully comfortable.

  4. If your dog lifts their chin away, that’s okay — respect the signal and reset. This choice is what makes the game cooperative.

  5. Once your dog consistently rests their chin, you can add a cue such as “chin” or “rest” if you wish.

Why it Matters

Chin Rest builds trust and choice into touch, helping your dog feel safe and understood. It’s a cornerstone of cooperative care, teaching your dog that they can opt in or out of handling and that calm touch brings predictability and safety.

Tips for Success
  • Practise in calm moments, not during grooming or vet prep.

  • Keep your posture relaxed and movements slow.

  • Always let your dog choose when to engage.

  • For nervous dogs, start with your hand lower or use a cushion as an easier target.
