Hello Game

Calmness • Confidence • Regulation • Focus

Description

A calm, playful game that helps your dog stay settled when they hear you talk — especially when you say words that usually predict excitement, like “Hi!” or “Hello!”. By rewarding calm neutrality, your dog learns that human voices don’t always mean something is about to happen.

How to Play
  1. Begin with no distractions. Casually say “Hi!” or “Hello!” and when your dog gives no response, mark and reward with food — directly or through a gentle scatter.

  2. Practise this in different rooms or at different times of day. Reward every calm, neutral response.

  3. Be unpredictable — say “Hi,” “Hello,” “Morning,” or “Thank you” when your dog least expects it, then calmly reward their lack of reaction.

  4. Gradually add mild distractions and practise both indoors and outside, rewarding for staying relaxed each time.

  5. When you greet someone for real, use a soft tone and reward your dog for staying neutral. Over time, they’ll learn that greetings are just part of life — nothing to get excited or worried about.

Why it Matters

The Hello Game breaks the pattern between your speech and your dog’s anticipation. Dogs quickly learn that when we talk, something exciting or stressful often follows — a walk, a visitor, or movement. By calmly rewarding neutrality, your dog learns that voices don’t predict anything important, helping them stay relaxed in everyday situations.

Tips for Success
  • Keep your tone natural and calm — avoid excitement or exaggerated energy.

  • Reward the absence of reaction — calm curiosity is perfect.

  • Practise in real-life situations, not just training sessions.

  • Combine with Calming Touch or Steady Hands for extra regulation if your dog struggles.
