Steady Hands
Regulation • Connection • Focus • Confidence

Description
A calm, co-regulation game that helps dogs practise thoughtful food taking while learning how to settle and focus around excitement. You’ll match your dog’s energy at first, then gradually slow the rhythm to guide them back to calm.
How to Play
Have small, tasty treats ready. You can use a mat or bed if your dog finds it helpful.
Start by matching your dog’s current energy - if they’re excitable, move your hand and food a little quicker to keep them engaged.
Gradually slow your delivery, letting your pace, breathing, and tone help your dog’s nervous system settle.
If your dog lunges or grabs, calmly pause or move your hand away, then resume once they’ve softened.
Continue this gentle back-and-forth rhythm until your dog is calmly taking food at your slower pace.
Why it Matters
Steady Hands teaches co-regulation — the art of helping your dog find calm through connection, not control. By matching their initial arousal level and then gently slowing down, you guide them toward balance without frustration. This shared rhythm strengthens trust and emotional safety, showing your dog that calmness doesn’t have to be demanded — it can be felt, together.
Tips for Success
Think flow, not freeze: start fast enough to meet your dog’s energy, then ease the tempo.
Keep your hands smooth and predictable — no teasing or jerky movements.
Breathe slowly and speak softly to reinforce calm.
Use before walks or stimulating situations to promote focus and regulation.
