Threshold Calm
Calmness • Confidence • Regulation • Adaptability

Description
This game helps dogs stay regulated during moments of transition, such as moving through doorways, gates, or between environments. By teaching your dog to pause and disengage before crossing thresholds, you build calm anticipation, confidence, and control.
How to Play
Begin at a doorway or threshold where your dog normally shows excitement or hesitation.
Place your hand on the door or handle, then feed your dog away from the door to shift focus and reduce anticipation.
Repeat several times — touch or open the door slightly, then feed away from it.
Gradually open the door wider, each time rewarding calm behaviour and disengagement from the doorway.
Once your dog can stay relaxed, cue them to move through the doorway and reward again. For fearful dogs, this can also help reduce pressure and build trust when approaching new environments.
Why it Matters
Threshold Calm helps your dog regulate emotions during transitions — whether that’s excitement about going out or uncertainty about stepping into a new space. By teaching calm disengagement, you create consistent routines that promote emotional stability and trust.
Tips for Success
Practise in different locations — front door, car, crate, or garden gate.
Keep your tone and movements slow and neutral.
For excitable dogs, reinforce calm pauses before moving forward.
For fearful dogs, let them choose when to cross — safety and choice come first.
Combine with Back to Base or Steady Hands for smoother transitions.
